A proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary for requests from you or someone else seeking resources from other servers. You connect to the proxy server, requesting a file or web page from a different server. The proxy server evaluates the request according to its filtering rules. You can purchase proxy server, download as freeware or utilize the services of others.
A proxy server has many potential purposes most of which is the added security, including:
- To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security)
- To speed up access to resources (using caching).
- To apply access policy to network services or content, e.g. to block undesired sites.
- To scan transmitted content before delivery for malware.
- To scan outbound content, ie:. for data leak protection.
- To circumvent regional restrictions or sensorship.
Without a proxy server, when you connect to a website or other online server, your request is routed through many servers before your final destination is reached. Each of these servers has the ability to gather information about you and your request from your personal information and browsing habits to even your e-mail. Encrypting your data in a secure shell via a proxy server will prevent would-be snoopers from spying on you.
You can surf anonymously, without revealing your identity to anyone. Your true IP address will be shielded, and all web traffic will appear as though it is coming from our server. A proxy server also can help with gaining access to blocked websites.
